RFID Facts

What is RFID?
RFID stands for radio-frequency identification. It is a small circuit integrated into your ticket or season pass card. When you pass through the lift gates, this circuit will register and open the gates for you.

Where should I carry my RFID pass/ticket card?
You must put your RFID card in a separate pocket from things such as credit/debit cards, cell phones, digital music players, or any foil-wrapped items such as gum wrappers, cold medicine, etc. A magnet will not destroy an RFID tag because the chip information is not stored magnetically.Use of a magnet or other erasing devices has no effect whatsoever on the chip.

Can I punch a hole in my RFID pass/ticket card?
No, holes must never be punched in your pass or lift card. The card has an antenna embedded that surrounds the embedded RFID chip. Any damage to the surrounding antenna will render the card inactive and must be replaced, which requires a replacement fee.

Will RFID chips be ruined if they go through the washing machine/dryer?
No. RFID chips are designed in such a way as to survive normal wear and tear for years, washing and drying included.

Will RFID technology interfere with my other wireless technology?
The radio frequencies used by RFID are assigned by regulatory agencies around the world to help ensure that no interference occurs.

What about RFID and pacemakers?
June Mountain's Axess/Sirius lift access system is CE certified and complies with all standards. It was found that with the proper use of devices there is no danger for persons using pacemakers when passing hands free entry systems at the lift. However, for reasons of precaution and compliance with the general requirements applicable, the following recommendations for using electromagnetic units should be adhered to:
-Guests with pacemakers must not wear their pass/lift cards near the heart when passing through the gate.
-A distance of 8–12 inches should be observed in the case of queues and while passing through the gate. If vertigo or sickness is experienced, get out of the direct vicinity of the gate or device.
-If you prefer not to pass through the gate, please alert the lift attendant and you will be given alternative direction for lift access.

Are there any other concerns associated with RFID?
June Mountain is employing Passive RFID technology which does not radiate any RF energy, but simply reflects it. As a result, the passive RFID tags used at June Mountain do not contribute any additional RF energy into the surrounding environment.

Why is June Mountain using RFID?
There are many guest benefits that RFID allows June Mountain to provide. Benefits include direct-to-lift convenience, reloadable tickets and easier access to the mountain and lifts.

I've seen scanning at other resorts, is RFID better?

RFID and bar code scanning achieve the same goals though different means. Bar codes require line of sight so that that each ticket or pass can be read by a scanner. RFID tags are read via an embedded passive radio frequency chip and do not require a line of sight. This means you will not have to show your pass or ticket each time you load the lift.

Can RFID be used to access my personal information?
No personal information is stored on individual RFID tags. Each unique RFID tag contains a multiple-digit number randomly associated with your user profile. This profile is kept as a secure component of our point of sale system and user database, and is not accessible to other guests or employees.

Will my RFID pass/ticket card interfere with other RFID products?
No, because each RFID tag is associated with a specific randomly generated number that is associated with a specific, secure database, other RFID products will not register within the June Mountain lift access system. Other RFID products currently in use include the expanded CA drivers license, US passports issued since October 2006, and many current makes and models of alpine ski and snowboard equipment.

How widely used is RFID technology?
RFID technology is used in wide variety of industries and applications. Your automobile almost certainly has an immobilizer to prevent it from being stolen. RFID has also been used extensively in toll collection, inventory control, building security, and library systems.

Can RFID be read from satellites?
No. It would require a huge amount of power to be able to read the chip from that far a range.
